Our 2018 Summer Meeting
ASCOA Team Completes 1964 Abe Mathews Trailmaker Build
During our ASCOA Summer Meet in Hutchinson, Minnesota in 2017 an idea came forward for the ASCOA members to tackle the restoration of a 1964 Abe Mathews Trailmaker. Several members had parts that they were willing to donate to the cause and the group left the Summer Meet anxious to start on the restoration.
Fast forward to this year’s Summer Meet which was held in early September in St. Ignace, Michigan at the Little Bear Hockey Arena in conjunction with the Annual Tractor Crossing of the Mackinaw Bridge. Over 1,400 tractors crossed the bridge this year and they all ended up at the hockey arena where the Summer ASCOA Meet was being held. We had lot of visitors! The meet was hosted by the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum and the facility and arrangements were outstanding. Thanks, Top of the Lake!
Tony Rolfes took the reins for the rebuild over the past year and had lots of help from other Minnesota members. On Friday afternoon the group in St. Ignace laid out all the parts for the reassembly and different members tackled putting the sled back together. Some put the new track back together while others started on the chassis. As a note, the chassis was a new NOS which had never been assembled.
When the track was ready, the groups merged and installed the track and suspension wheels with the chassis. Then the hood, motor, transmission and drive components were added to the mix. Everything went together very well. Very soon, guards, the windshield, decals and seat were added. Even the vacuum throttle worked great when assembled. By mid-afternoon on Saturday the build was completed and the Trailmaker looked really great.
The Trailmaker raffle will run between now and the winning ticket will be pulled at the Waconia Show in January, 2020. Yes, you read that right --- January 2020. This will give the club the time to show off the sled in at least Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and Minnesota prior to the raffle drawing.
Also, as with the last two sled raffles each ASCOA member will receive raffle tickets to help sell or to buy for themselves.
The restoration of the Abe Mathews Trailmaker has been a lot of fun and has been enjoyed by a many of our club members. In fact, the club is already talking about another rebuild over the next year or so. A 1963 Ski Doo has been donated and is the planned target for 2018-2019.
